Your First Hour in Full AutoCAD on Windows
Start a drawing from acad.dwt or acadiso.dwt, draw in model space with LINE, CIRCLE, OFFSET, and TRIM, set units, save a DWG, and plot a basic PDF.
By Editorial Team · Oct 23, 2026
Full AutoCAD on Windows is a desktop drafting program sold as a commercial subscription. This page is one hour with that program: start a drawing from a template, draw a few objects in model space, set the units, save a DWG, and plot a basic PDF. It is not AutoCAD Web, and it is not a certification course. Finishing the hour means you can make a small, saved, plotted drawing. It does not make you a licensed drafter.
The catalog page is AutoCAD for Windows. Softcoria does not host the installer and does not sell the subscription. Install the desktop program from the Autodesk account that owns the license, then use the steps below on a supported 64-bit Windows PC.
What you are opening
Autodesk ships more than one product with AutoCAD in the name. This hour is the full desktop application. AutoCAD Web is a browser editor with a different screen, and the steps here will not match it. The Architecture, Mechanical, Electrical, and other specialized toolsets are separate add-ons. The AutoCAD 2026 Windows requirements page lists those toolsets as well. Ignore them for this hour. You only need the base commands on the Home tab and the command line.
Menu names below are the English interface. On a translated install, the same items sit in the same menus. Command names can be typed. If the local language does not accept the English word, type an underscore first: _LINE, _CIRCLE, _OFFSET, _TRIM, _UNITS, _ZOOM, _PAN, and _PLOT. The underscore tells AutoCAD to use the global English command. Esc cancels whatever is running. Enter confirms a value. After a command finishes, Enter or the spacebar starts it again.
Windows requirements before you install
Install only on a supported 64-bit Windows. Autodesk’s published basic figures for AutoCAD 2026 on Windows are below. Read x64 vs x86 vs ARM64 Windows and check Settings, System, About, System type before you download. A 32-bit Windows install is outside this list.
Operating system64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 Processor, basic2.5–2.9 GHz with 8 logical cores Memory8 GB RAM, 32 GB recommended Disk10 GB Graphics2 GB GPU with DirectX 11; 8 GB GPU with DirectX 12 recommended Display1920×1080 .NET.NET 8 through AutoCAD 2026.1.1, and .NET 10 from 2026.1.2The .NET line changes with the update. Open About from the Help menu and read the installed build before you fetch a runtime. Builds through 2026.1.1 need .NET 8. Starting with 2026.1.2, the requirement is .NET 10. Install that runtime from Microsoft if AutoCAD asks for it. Do not grab a .NET installer from a random download site.
The same habits as any other desktop installer still apply. Confirm you are on Autodesk’s own site, then run the setup. How to Safely Download and Install Software on Windows and How to Check if a Windows Program Is Safe Before Installing It cover the page, the publisher, and the Windows prompts. Softcoria’s page is a catalog entry, not a file host.
Sign in, including a student or trial copy
A commercial subscription, a student entitlement, and a trial all activate through an Autodesk account. After setup, start AutoCAD and sign in with the account that actually holds that access. A trial that has expired does not turn into a paid license by itself. A student offer is only for the education account that qualified for it. If the program says the license is not activated, stop drawing and fix the sign-in. Working offline, signing into a personal account with no entitlement, or leaving the Windows date and time wrong are ordinary reasons the license stays inactive.
This is not a licensing workaround. There is no file on the Softcoria page that unlocks AutoCAD. If the account page at Autodesk does not list a current subscription, trial, or education product, the desktop program will not become fully usable from this guide.
Start a drawing from a template
Use File, New, or press Ctrl+N. The Select Template dialog should open in AutoCAD’s template folder. Choose one of these two stock files:
- acadiso.dwt if you measure in millimeters. This is the metric ISO template.
- acad.dwt if you measure in inches. This is the imperial template.
A template is a starting drawing. It sets the unit system, the layers you begin with, and text and dimension styles. For this hour, stay with the stock file. A company title-block template can wait until you know why that office uses it. If New skips the dialog and opens a drawing immediately, a default template is already set for QNEW. Run _UNITS and read the insertion scale before you draw, so you know whether you landed in inches or millimeters.
The walkthrough below uses acadiso.dwt and millimeter sizes. The same commands work in acad.dwt. An imperial twin of the same exercise is a 10 by 6 inch rectangle, an offset of 0.5, and a circle of radius 1. Do not mix the two templates in one file.
Stay in model space
Model space is the large drawing area where you draw at full size. In a stock template, click the Model tab at the lower left and leave it selected. Layout tabs, often named Layout1 and Layout2, are paper space. They are for sheets, title blocks, and viewports. This hour does not open them. If you plot from a layout by accident, the PDF can come out blank because nothing has been placed on that sheet yet.
You are drawing on the current layer. In a stock acadiso.dwt or acad.dwt that layer is 0. Leave the layer list alone until the geometry exists. Zoom and pan change the view only. They do not move the objects and they do not change the units.
Draw the rectangle with LINE
Type _LINE and press Enter. The command line asks for a first point. Type coordinates as x,y with a comma and no spaces.
- Type
0,0and press Enter. That is the lower-left corner. - Type
100,0and press Enter. That is a line 100 mm to the right. - Type
100,60and press Enter. - Type
0,60and press Enter. - Type
Cand press Enter. Close joins the last point back to the first and ends the command.
You should see a closed 100 by 60 mm rectangle. If the screen looks empty, the view is probably somewhere else. Double-click the mouse wheel. That runs Zoom Extents and frames whatever you have drawn. You can also type _ZOOM, then E, then Enter.
Clicking points with the mouse works too. Press F8 to turn Ortho on before you click the next point, so the segment stays horizontal or vertical. Ortho is a status toggle, not a different command. If a line shoots off at an angle, press Esc, type U, and Enter to undo that segment, then try again with Ortho on or with typed coordinates. Typed coordinates are the more reliable method for this first drawing.
The command line is the place to look when nothing seems to happen. Press F2 if you want the taller text window. AutoCAD may be waiting for a point. Read the prompt before you click around the ribbon. If a command is stuck, Esc backs out. Ctrl+Z undoes a finished action.
OFFSET a second rectangle
Type _OFFSET and press Enter.
- When it asks for the offset distance, type
10and press Enter. That is 10 mm. - Click the rectangle you just drew.
- Click a point inside the rectangle. AutoCAD copies the shape to that side, 10 mm in.
- Press Enter to end the command.
You now have a smaller rectangle inside the first. If the copy landed outside, you clicked the outer side. Type U and Enter, run _OFFSET again, and click inside. Offset distance is a real distance in the drawing’s units, not a zoom percentage. Ten millimeters is ten millimeters whether you are zoomed in or out.
Add a CIRCLE
Type _CIRCLE and press Enter. The default prompt wants a center, then a radius.
- Type
50,30and press Enter. That center sits in the middle of the 100 by 60 rectangle. - Type
12and press Enter. That is the radius, so the diameter is 24 mm.
Other options appear in the prompt, including 3P, 2P, and Ttr. You do not need them this hour. If you start one by accident, Esc and run _CIRCLE again with a center and a radius. The circle in this exercise sits inside the inner rectangle and does not cross it. That is fine. The trim in the next step uses a separate line.
Cross the plate and TRIM
Type _LINE and press Enter. Type 0,30, Enter, then 100,30, Enter, then Enter again to end. You get a horizontal line through the middle of the outer rectangle, passing across the circle.
Type _TRIM and press Enter. In current full AutoCAD the command starts in Quick mode. The prompt looks similar to this: select an object to trim, or Shift-select to extend, with options for cutting edges and mode. You do not have to pre-select cutting edges in Quick mode. Every object can act as an edge.
- Hover over the horizontal line where it lies inside the outer rectangle, between the left and right sides.
- Click that middle portion. AutoCAD cuts it back to the vertical sides of the rectangle.
- Press Enter to leave the command.
Click the piece you want to remove, not the piece you want to keep. If the whole line disappears, type U and Enter. That usually means the cutting edges were not where you thought, or the line did not actually cross the rectangle. Zoom in with the wheel and look before you click again.
Standard mode is still there if Quick mode feels loose. In the TRIM prompt, choose Mode, then Standard. You then select the cutting edges, press Enter, and only after that click the segments to remove. Shift-select extends an object to a boundary instead of trimming it. For this hour, Quick mode and one careful click are enough. Do not chase the fillet or chamfer tools yet. TRIM only cuts existing geometry. It does not invent a rounded corner unless you already drew the arc or circle you want to keep.
Zoom and pan without moving the geometry
Roll the mouse wheel to zoom toward the cursor. Hold the wheel and drag to pan. Double-click the wheel for Zoom Extents. Those three habits cover almost every “I lost the drawing” moment in the first hour.
The commands are _ZOOM and _PAN. After _ZOOM, type E for Extents or W for a window you drag around a corner. Real-time zoom and pan finish when you press Esc or Enter. Panning to the side does not change coordinates. If a point you type lands off screen, Zoom Extents finds it. The numbers you typed are still the numbers in the file.
Check UNITS before you trust the size
Type _UNITS and press Enter. The Drawing Units dialog opens. For the acadiso.dwt exercise, Length type can stay Decimal, and Insertion scale should be millimeters. Precision is how many decimal places AutoCAD displays, not how accurate the geometry is. You can show zero decimal places and the line is still 100 mm long.
Insertion scale matters when you later insert another drawing or a block. If this file is in millimeters and you insert an inches drawing, AutoCAD uses that scale to convert. Getting it wrong is how a “small” title block arrives huge, or the reverse. This hour does not insert a second file. Set the scale now so the DWG does not lie about its units.
If you opened acad.dwt instead, expect inches. Architectural length type shows feet and inches. Decimal length type shows plain numbers that you treat as inches. Either is valid. What is not valid is drawing a 100-unit rectangle in an inches file and calling it 100 mm. Start a new drawing from the other template if you chose the wrong one. Changing the insertion scale label does not rescale objects you already drew.
Save a DWG
Press Ctrl+S or use File, Save. Name the file something plain, such as first-hour.dwg, and put it in a local folder you can find again, not on a random download directory. DWG is AutoCAD’s native format. Saving is not the same as plotting. The DWG is the editable drawing. The PDF in the next section is a print.
Use File, Save As when you need a second copy or an older format. The file-type list includes older DWG versions. Pick one only when someone names the release they still use. Each Save after the first also writes a .bak beside the DWG. That backup is the previous save of the same drawing. It is useful if you overwrite good work. It is not a file to send as the current drawing.
If AutoCAD closes before you save, it may offer Drawing Recovery Manager the next time you start it. Autodesk also writes autosave files with an .sv$ extension. You can rename a copy of one of those to .dwg and open the copy. Rely on Ctrl+S anyway. Autosave is a spare, and the interval is whatever that PC is set to.
Plot a basic PDF
Stay on the Model tab. Type _PLOT or press Ctrl+P. In the Plot dialog:
- Under printer/plotter, choose DWG To PDF.pc3. That plotter ships with a normal full AutoCAD install and writes a PDF.
- Choose a paper size. A4 fits this millimeter exercise. Letter fits the inch exercise on acad.dwt.
- Set What to plot, or Plot area, to Extents so the PDF includes all of the geometry rather than one accidental window.
- Set Plot scale to Fit to paper. Tick Center the plot if that box is there, so the rectangle is not shoved into a corner.
- Click Preview. You should see the two rectangles, the circle, and the trimmed line. Close the preview.
- Click OK and choose where to save the PDF.
Fit to paper is a check print. It proves the geometry plotted. It is not a scale drawing you would send to a shop. A later drawing uses a real scale, such as 1:1 or 1:50, once the units and the sheet are chosen on purpose. Leave plot styles at their default for this PDF. A monochrome plot style is a publishing choice, not a requirement for seeing your first hour on paper.
If Preview is empty, cancel and check three things. You are on the Model tab, not an unused layout. Plot area is Extents, not a window you dragged in empty space. Zoom Extents in the drawing shows the rectangle. If DWG To PDF.pc3 is missing from the printer list, do not download a PC3 from a forum. It is part of the AutoCAD installation. Repair or reinstall from your Autodesk account.
When the license, the graphics, or the file version fails
- Student or trial license not activated. Sign in with the Autodesk account that owns the education access or the trial. Confirm the PC is online and that Windows date and time are correct. An expired trial will not activate. A different Autodesk account, even one you can sign in to, does nothing if the entitlement is on another login. Read the account on Autodesk’s site before you reinstall. Reinstalling does not create a license.
- The view is black, flickering, or missing lines. AutoCAD 2026’s basic graphics figure is a 2 GB GPU with DirectX 11. The recommended figure is 8 GB with DirectX 12. Update the driver from Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, or the PC maker, not from a driver-updater advertisement. Then type
_GRAPHICSCONFIG. As a test, turn hardware acceleration off and restart AutoCAD. If the drawing looks normal with acceleration off, the driver was the problem. Update it, then turn acceleration back on. Leave it off only as a temporary way to keep working. - A drawing will not open because it is from a newer version. Older AutoCAD cannot read a DWG saved by a newer release. The wording of the message varies, and renaming the file does not fix it. The person who has the newer program uses Save As and picks an older DWG type from the file-type list. You need a release that understands the format, or you need that saved-down file. Sending your older program a 2026 DWG and hoping is how this error starts.
- .NET missing. Match the runtime to the build in About. .NET 8 through 2026.1.1, .NET 10 from 2026.1.2, from Microsoft, on 64-bit Windows.
What this hour deliberately skips
There is no 3D, no dynamic block, no sheet set, no dimension style lesson, and no tool palette from a specialized toolset. Object snaps exist — Endpoint on the status bar helps later — but the coordinates above do not need them. Certification outlines cover far more than LINE, CIRCLE, OFFSET, TRIM, units, a DWG, and one PDF. Use Autodesk’s own learning material when you want that path. This page stops when the PDF preview shows the plate you drew.
FAQ
Is this guide about AutoCAD Web?
No. These steps are for the full AutoCAD desktop program on Windows. AutoCAD Web runs in a browser and does not use this ribbon, command line, or plot dialog.
Do I need the Architecture or Mechanical toolset?
No. This hour uses only the base AutoCAD commands LINE, CIRCLE, OFFSET, TRIM, UNITS, and PLOT. Specialized toolsets add trade tools this walkthrough never opens.
Which template should I pick, acad.dwt or acadiso.dwt?
Pick acadiso.dwt if you want millimeters. Pick acad.dwt if you want inches. Both are stock full-AutoCAD templates. Check UNITS after the drawing opens so the insertion scale matches that choice.
Can I type command names instead of using the ribbon?
Yes. Type the name and press Enter. On a translated install, prefix the English name with an underscore, such as _LINE. Esc cancels. Enter or the spacebar repeats the last command.
Why will a student or trial license not start?
The desktop program has to sign in to the Autodesk account that holds the education access or the trial. An expired trial, the wrong account, an offline PC, or a wrong Windows clock will leave it inactive. Softcoria does not supply a license.
Why can an older AutoCAD not open my DWG?
A DWG written by a newer release is not readable by an older one. Use Save As and choose an older DWG type from the file-type list. Renaming the file does not change the format.
